2018 Year in Review

2018 was a year of radical transformation for me.

When I realized the odds of me dying this year from Cystic Fibrosis were relatively minimal, I set out to find myself.

At the beginning of the year, I was building and scaling Landmark Makers, a recruiting services firm dedicated to helping smaller businesses scale through human capital. We created the online course, completed a handful of search assignments, and then one day I woke up with a fast heart-rate.

I hated it.

I hated the business.

I hated who I was in the business.

I loved the education side, facilitation side, training side, but completing the actual step by step recruiting was exhausting work for me that led me to anxiety. I remember taking a search assignment from a well respected executive who asked me to make sure the woman I hired for his was “hot and yet, professional.” The condescending tone he made while I searched for a level of hotness that made him happy and yet kept his wife at bay, destroyed me inside.

I never finished that search and shut the company down.

Then my boyfriend and I traveled to Costa Rica to hang out with friends I met on an entrepreneurs retreat to Powder Mountain. I made friendships with people that are now in my core group, people I can call up any time and who taught me a lot about who I am and what is possible in the world. People who unknowingly saved me from myself and helped me embrace a core mission.

The summer was dotted with keynotes on happiness and fulfillment and started getting booked for keynotes regarding sales tactics as well. I was starting to make real money from speaking that could sustain a lifestyle and officially got off of disability making myself one of only a handful of people with Cystic Fibrosis to get a second chance on life and not have to succumb to the system.

While on a hiatus from the stage, my boyfriend and I slipped off for a week in Yosemite. I woke up one night to a raccoon in my tent, eating my trail mix and screamed loudly when he jumped up onto my mattress to cuddle. Or kill me.

I started taking on coaching clients, begrudgingly, because I never saw “coaching” as a true profession. Yet, there was no way to stop the storm that was brewing inside my soul.

Unleash the Power Within by Tony Robbins was the kick in the ass I had been waiting for. I crystalized my vision and realized to have the life I want to live, I need to burn the bridges to my back-up plan.

With that, I took down my online recruiting course and vowed to focus solely on speaking and coaching as my primary business. I said goodbye to all of my clients and gave them recommendations for other search firms and welcomed an income of almost $0.

And I did what any girl would do in a crisis. I got a puppy that is expected to weigh 4 pounds fully grown, named her Chanel, and dropped thousands on training and dog outfits.

I started getting asked to do more sales training and took on a client for 6 months, resulting in them having the best 3/5 months in the history of the company. Sales closing percentages increased by 71% and I felt that I was falling into stride.

I went to an integrative NLP Coaching seminar, learned the basics and then passed my practitioners exam with a 90%. Enrolled in other studies so will have my masters by this time next year.

Jeff proposed on Nov 8th in a helicopter ride overlooking San Diego.

We took a trip to Big Bear, Ca with our new puppy and I used it as a time to reflect on the adversity 2018 showed me.

We had Christmas on the slopes of Mammoth, where I attempted to ski for the first time and put the toddlers on the bunny slopes to shame with my mad skills. AKA I fell a lot.

And then I came back, reinvigorated and highly contemplative.

Below is my list of goals that I made in 2017 for 2018. Some have been completed, anything with Landmark was not.

And for 2019 I brought on a team of 4 incredible humans to be on the “Board of Directors for my Life” to make sure that the new plan is better implemented than the old plan.

2019’s theme is Fortitude. Which, is the courage to do something despite adversity. It seems fitting, no more disability checks, inconsistent speaking opportunities, a handful of clients. There’s going to be times I don’t feel like doing something, going to the gym or making a cold call, hiring and scaling, but that’s the beauty. When you don’t want to do something, it’s a sign you should be leaning in.

I wish you the happiest of New Years and welcome seeing your goal list as well.
